Confirmed in October / November 2022 the first cross-border races of the Alpine Ski World Cup Cervinia / Zermatt
The International Ski Federation (FIS) has officially announced that the first cross-border races in the history of the Alpine Ski World Cup, initially scheduled for the 2023/2024 season, will already be held between the end of October and the beginning of November of this year, at start of the next World Cup season.
Cervinia and Zermatt will host two race weekends, with two men's downhill runs and two women's downhill runs on the new spectacular Matterhorn track, specially designed for the occasion. After the start in Switzerland, the race track will develop for the most part in Italy, on the slopes of the Cervino Ski Paradise.
The start of the men's downhill will take place at an altitude of 3,700 meters, arriving at the 2,835 meters of Cime Bianche. In spring 2023, the new 3S cable car between Testa Grigia and Piccolo Cervino, a fundamental piece for the completion of the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing, the futuristic alpine crossing continues by cable car, which will directly connect Cervinia and Zermatt, will allow to further raise the departure of the race track.
The Cervinia / Zermatt stages will offer speed athletes an early season opening, giving continuity to the World Cup calendar which, thanks to these new appointments, will not have to suffer interruptions after the opening of Soelden. "I am absolutely satisfied that FIS believed so much in the" Matterhorn Cervino World Cup Races "project that it wanted the first 4 races already in the autumn of 2022; now, however, satisfaction must leave room for the fullest commitment on the part of the entire organization to make an event of this magnitude possible in just 9 months. We are aware of the great effort that we will have to put in place, but we are equally convinced that we will complete this ambitious project in the best possible way ", comments Herbert Tovagliari, President and CEO of CERVINO SPA, the company that manages the Breuil-Cervinia plants. , Valtournenche, Torgnon and Chamois
The first cross-border races of the Alpine Skiing World Cup are just one of the many projects involving the CERVINO S.P.A. and whose benefits will fall on the entire destination of Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche. At the infrastructural level, in addition to the aforementioned Matterhorn Alpine Crossing, important investments concern the Gran Sometta junction - a fundamental link between the slopes of Cervinia and those of Valtournenche -, with the ski lift which in the next winter season will be replaced by a six-seater chairlift. with automatic coupling of the latest generation. In addition, the restyling is already underway to improve the aesthetics of the stations and the redevelopment of the entire Plateau Rosa area is being studied, which will contribute to further increase the attractiveness of the glacier area even for those who do not practice winter sports.
